Arriving in Rome:

Leonardo de Vinci International–Fiumicino & Ciampino Airports

Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, one of the 25 busiest airports in the world, is large and modern but very manageable. The main criticism it receives concerns its relatively long distance (35 km) from the city center, although affordable transportation options make this only a minor inconvenience. The airport is served by dozens of international airlines and is the only hub for domestic carrier Alitalia. There are frequent flights to all major European cities as well as New York, Cairo, Buenos Aires, Moscow, and Singapore. The airport contains three main terminals, A, B and C, with smaller off shoots like Terminal 5, which services several American airlines.

Transportation facilities are very good at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport despite its distance from the city. A reliable, cheap option is the Leonardo Express train operated by Trenitalia that leaves from the airport terminal every half hour. The train arrives in Rome’s Termini Station in 30 minutes with no stops. The local non-express train leaves more frequently but takes longer, depending on your final destination. Taxis are readily available (look for the white mid-sized vehicles in front of the gate) and driving connection to highway A91 Roma-Fiumicino is very straightforward. Buses such as Terravision take a bit longer than the train depending on traffic.

Ciampino airport is decidedly smaller but much closer to the city, about 15km from downtown Rome. About 100 airlines use Ciampino, many of which offer incredibly cheap discount flights to cities around Europe. These low-cost airlines include Easyjet, Ryanair and Wizzair. Keep in mind that this is a minor airport and services are limited compared to those of its larger cousin. Public transportation is available while flights are in service, though the airport does close around midnight as flights cease. Terravision y Schiaffini offer service between Ciampino and Termini railway station.
