Barajas International Airport:

Gateway to Madrid

With about 50 million passengers going through its terminals every year, Barajas International is among the world's busiest airports. However, the addition of a fourth terminal in 2006 solved any congestion problems the airport did have, and the facility is now a pleasant place to experience with minimal waiting times and fuss.

Between them, the airport’s four terminals serve hundreds of destinations around the world. Most European and budget flights arrive at Terminal 1, while international flights from every continent use Terminal 4.

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are all housed in one large building and it is easy to move between them by foot. The newer Terminal 4 is in a separate building that is linked to the others by a shuttle bus, which runs every five minutes.

Transport options to central Madrid are excellent. Madrid Metro Line 8 connects the airport with downtown and stops at Terminals 2 and 4. This is your easiest and cheapest option for going downtown. There are also regular bus services and shuttles, or you could hire a taxi. If you plan to drive, there are numerous car rental agencies in the airport.

If you need to wait overnight for a connecting flight, there are plenty of hotels to choose from near Madrid’s airport, although you will find better selection and value if you make the short trip downtown.
